A Family Business

According to Tim Otting, his dad Larry started the business 45 years ago.

Since then, it has become a true family affair. Larry is now semi-retired, so Tim, his two sons, Tim’s brother and Tim’s brother’s son all work at the business.

On our visit, a cold dreary winter day, they were in the office. They genuinely seemed to enjoy their unique opportunity to work together.

The business includes an auto repair garage, paint and body shop, restoration shop, and a salvage yard with a crusher on site. The salvage yard has between 2,000 to 2,500 vehicles with about 400 being antiques. The crusher is fired up as needed to get rid of vehicles that have no parts remaining. Tim commented they rarely crush an old vehicle, unless it is too far gone for any use.

The salvage yard is well organized with old vehicles separated from the newer stuff. Trucks have their own section. The yard specializes in GM vehicles and one impressive section includes 300 to 350 first through fourth generation Camaros and Firebirds. Buicks seem to be a favorite in the oldies section and include a lot of Rivieras.

There are maintained lanes to easily access the vehicles. Be aware though, walking through the yard just after a soaking rain will make you an inch or two taller due to the sticky red Georgia clay on the soles of your boots.

The older vehicles and parts are not on a computerized inventory, so Tim advised it would be best to ask him or his dad about them. Most vehicles can have parts removed from them but there are a few that are for sale only as a complete unit. Parts removal will be done by business personnel, or can be done by the customer if they have tools and the skill.
